This wasn’t a typical install. The theater platform had to carry 130 guests, operate in near silence, and rotate with perfect timing—on the third floor of the building. That’s where we saw opportunity, not obstacles.

Our team engineered a precision custom turntable that met every demand. We worked hand-in-hand with architects and contractors to hoist massive steel components by crane, transport them in sections, and assemble them with exacting care. The result: a jaw-dropping feature that feels effortless to the viewer—and that’s exactly the point.

Our controls sync perfectly with the theater’s automation. Every cue hits right on time. Behind the scenes, a Nord 4 hp helical-bevel gearmotor powers the rotation. A custom UL508A-listed control system ensures safety and timing. It all runs on standard 480V, 3-phase power—simple, robust, reliable.

Building a rotating theater platform that moves quietly is one thing. Isolating two screenings happening at once? That’s something else entirely.

We designed a central soundproof divider using 2×6 steel tubing wrapped in acoustic drywall and specialty insulation. A pneumatic seal closes the gap for full isolation. Beneath the deck, baffling absorbs vibration and motor noise. Guests stay immersed in their moment—never hearing what’s happening on the other side.

From Digital Model to Live Experience

We engineered the entire system in SolidWorks, designing each element to spec: tapered wheels, bearing systems, baffling, and control logic. From there, we fabricated the steel in-house, machined every precision part, and coordinated delivery to the third floor.

Crane lifts, careful assembly, rigorous testing—it all paid off. The system works exactly as designed, providing smooth, silent, synchronized movement from the first show to the last.

The rotating turntable measures 43 feet wide and stands 24 inches high. It supports 100,000 pounds of live load, designed for continuous use all day long. The full rotation takes three minutes and operates with near-silent precision.

The launch station required a center pivot. It needed to rotate a 60,000-pound structure safely, while routing multiple high-voltage power cables, fiber optic lines, and helium gas pipes—all allowing for full 720° rotation.

A Smarter Cable Management System—Designed In-House

The solution? A rugged yet refined cable management system, engineered entirely in-house. Instead of relying on bulky and expensive cable chain systems with long lead times, we developed a simple vertical coiling mechanism. This mechanism allowed the heavy-duty cables to move freely and efficiently. Moreover, this approach minimized space requirements, reduced costs, and eliminated unnecessary moving parts—all without compromising on performance.

At the core of OdySea Voyager is a custom-designed Carousel USA turntable built to deliver smooth, synchronized rotation across five zones. Building a rotating theater turntable of this scale called for careful planning, powerful equipment, and a strong focus on safety. Carousel USA custom engineered a large-format turntable powered by four SEW MOVIDRIVE variable frequency drives, each connected to its own motor. Configured in a leader-follower setup, the drives communicate in real time, ensuring that all motors move in perfect sync. This coordination is what keeps the ride running evenly and reliably, aligning each seating section precisely with its corresponding habitat.

To power the lighting and audio systems on the custom engineered turntable, Carousel USA avoided the clutter of traditional wiring. Instead, engineers installed a circular conductor bar along the pit’s perimeter beneath the turntable. A rotating current collector rides along this track, quietly delivering continuous power to all onboard systems. This innovative solution keeps the experience smooth, seamless, and visually unobstructed.

Custom Turntable Engineered for Safety and Control

Because OdySea Voyager welcomes high volumes of guests daily, safety had to come first. Every seating zone features emergency stop buttons, giving staff immediate control if needed. At the same time, a touchscreen control panel near the entrance allows attendants to manage movement easily from the loading area. Behind the scenes, a central control panel for the custom engineered turntable remains securely tucked away. This Turntable is accessible only to authorized aquarium personnel.

During system testing, engineers discovered that the motors generated significant braking energy, which could eventually damage the drives’ internal components. To solve this, Carousel USA added braking resistors to each drive’s DC bus. These components absorb and safely release excess energy, extending the life of the system and protecting its performance over time.
